Transitional House
Action Ministries and Transitional Housing

Our church supports Action Ministries and its Transitional Housing program for homeless families. The purpose of this program is to help homeless families move to a state of self-sufficiency and permanent housing while offering them managed support.

Participants in the program may live in a transitional house for up to 2 years. During this time, they must abide by a contract which outlines specific guidelines that are overseen by their Case Manager. To enter the program, adult members of the family must be employed or actively seeking employment. They are required to contribute 20% of their income to housing expenses, and they must save 10% of their income which will be returned to them when they leave the program.

The contract outlines expectations regarding upkeep of the property, being a good neighbor, and appropriate conduct while living in the transitional home.

The Case Manager develops a Self Sufficiency Plan that includes setting goals for employment, money management, and parenting skills.

Dunwoody UMC is currently providing financial and community support to a family that lives in a transitional house in Chamblee. The mother and children ages 8, 6, and 2 moved into our transitional house in December of 2011.

The Transitional Housing Steering Committee meets on the third Wednesday night of each month at 7:05 pm in the Conference Room. We meet with the Case Manager and discuss ways that our church can support our family.

Members of our congregation have donated furniture, clothing, meals, toiletries, and other useful items.
