THE LIBRARY'S SERVICE HOURS ARE:

SUNDAYS FROM 10 TO 12:30 P.M.

WEDNESDAYS FROM 5 TO 8 P.M.

All other days, the library is open to its patrons with checking out books done on an honor system. Simply sign the library card in the back of each item and leave card(s) in the box at the check out area. Then stamp with the date due stamp on the date due slip in the back of each item. Books may be returned in the receptacle under the book display window at any time.

The DUMC Library/Media Center has over 7000 volumes of book and non-book items. Items are loaned for a month. An outside depository for returning items is conveniently located in the hallway under the book display window. An integrated collection that allows all non-book items (audiovisuals) to be shelved along with the books, the library also has a “ready reference” section. If you’re searching for something on Paul, for example, you will find cassettes, video, etc. located with the books on Paul. The History Room is located in the front of the library. OTHER INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE LIBRARY ARE:

There are usually about 12 adult volunteer staff assistants and a student volunteer or two. To apply as a prospective staff volunteer, visit the annual Ministry Fair booth or fill out an application available at the Library. All volunteers attend one or two work day sessions per month, plus at least one Sunday morning from 10 to 10:30 a.m. OR one Wednesday per month. Questions about where to find your books, etc. on Sunday mornings from 10 to 11:30? Ask a staff or student volunteer assistant.
A Quarterly Newsletter shares information on Library Assistants, What’s new in the library and Current events. A recent issue explains the reserved resource books for specific areas, such as Adult resources, Alzheimer’s, CAAR, or Large Print books. Pick up the latest copy today in the library.
Check our book displays for current appropriate subjects and books. Inquire for opportunity to use the book display for your special DUMC interest. For example; our current book display is a Report from the recent National Church and Synagogue Library Assoc. Convention. This is a vital librarians’ association that encourages networking, workshops, etc.

Bette Whitley’s Art

The library is honored to present Bette Whitley’s art, now on display through December. Bette’s interest in art came from childhood: a coloring book. She took art classes in high school and continued to purse to a college degree in Fine Arts. While Bette decided on a more “sensible” vocation, she never lost her love for or interest in art. She has changed her “medium of choice’ from watercolor to multiple media, including oil, oil pastels, pastels, colored pencil and ink. A decade ago, she began painting portraits of pets and peoples homes, first for friends and then for others. Bette is a member of the national Watercolor Society, Colored Pencil Society of America, and the Spruill Center for the Arts. Her favorite Atlanta artists are realists Karen Hollingsworth and Virginia Parker and impressionist, Nancy Francke. Watch Sunday Bulletins for the “Meet and Greet” in early November and drop in to view her exhibit and ask her burning questions about her art interests.

Brand NEW in the library, but not a book…

...for 2011-2012 is a group of volunteers who love books and the library. You know who you are, you can’t wait to drop in and just “breathe” the bookish air. For a commitment of a minimal amount of time annually, you may become of charter member of this newly formed group at NO COST! Yes, there is only ONE annual meeting until by-laws or guidelines are set up, and the new members may decide on a small fee in its future for helping our church library expand its services and its holdings. It’s that easy! Please call us on x 263 to volunteer for the Book Nook or come by to sign up on the clipboard. Oh, the name will be decided by the “Friends of the Library” group or is it “The Library Friends?” Join us and help us decide on Wednesday! And watch us grow from a small beginning group to ?????
